The Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC), a New York and Paris-based, nonprofit organization with a focus on multilingualism, cross-cultural understanding, and the dissemination of ideas through book publishing, is seeking talented volunteers & interns all year round (unpaid internships and volunteerships). Our office is located in New York (on 59th street and Lexington Avenue) and Paris (198 Avenue de France). Remote internships are also welcome with regular zoom meetings and tasks to accomplish on your own schedule. VIRTUAL BOOK TOUR ORGANIZER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to organize virtual book tours for its growing pool of international authors. Selected candidates will be required to create lists of potential venues, sollicit organizers, schedule and promote events, support authors, administer zoom events, edit recordings.  Requirements: Develop book talk marketing strategies for authors. Support, publicize, and facilitate live book talks and on-demand viewing.  Requirements: Good marketing skills Strong knowledge of English. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Self-starter with the ability to prioritize and work independently. Creative marketing instinct. Experience with Zoom and other platforms.

DISTRIBUTOR

CALEC is seeking talented individuals for TBR Books, our publishing program, which seeks to empower readers around the world. In order to grow and become sustainable TBR Books  needs to develop its network of bookstores and distributors in several countries, working in partnership with local interns and volunteers. Responsibilities: identifying distributors, assessing their services, contacting and establishing partnership agreements, nurturing and building partnerships with responsive bookstores, preparing and sending professional newsletters. Requirements: creative and critical thinker possess strong verbal and written skills, highly organized, detail-oriented,capable of tackling multiple dataset at a time. Candidates should work well independently, but also thrive as a member of a team. Good interpersonal skills, professionalism and efficiency for interacting with bookstore managers and distributors.

GRANT WRITER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide administrative support to our non-profit organization’s development, in partnership with the CEO and Board. Responsibilities: researching grants, locate viable foundations, identify key contact personnel, application formats, eligibility requirements, and specific giving priorities. Develop grant proposals for specific projects, customize problem statements, budgets, and layouts. Requirements: creative and critical thinker possess strong verbal and written skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, capable of tackling multiple grant proposals at a time. Candidates should work well independently, but also thrive as a member of a team. Good interpersonal skills, professionalism and integrity for interacting with potential donors, board members and volunteers.

COPY EDITOR

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide editorial support for its publishing arm, TBR Books. Selected candidates will be required to copyedit, proof, and research materials to ensure accuracy and adherence to style guides, as well as typeset and publish manuscripts. Responsibilities: Copyedit and proofread manuscripts, indices, jacket/cover copy, and other materials. Prepare both paper and electronic manuscripts for design and typesetting. Collate author and proofreader corrections, and check all stages of proofs. Assist CALEC in evaluating manuscripts and preparing permissions logs. Help to maintain and update various online databases. Provide general administrative support Requirements: Excellent copyediting and proofreading skillsStrong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Detail-oriented; organized; Familiarity with track changes and electronic copyediting in MS Word; experience with Adobe Acrobat

WEBSITE MANAGER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide content support for its three multilingual websites (calec.org, tbr-books.org, and newyorkinfrench.net). Selected candidates will be required to maintain our websites. Responsibilities: Create, edit and curate relevant content for our websites. Manage and update multilingual pages, and add products and information as needed. Other tasks include: Coordinating translations, Measuring the performance of content and generating reports. Requirements: some experience with WordPress and Ning. Editorial and/or social media experience. Video/photo editing experience a plus. Excellent content curation and writing skills. An organized and quick learner.

TRANSLATOR

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide translation support for its publishing arm, TBR Books. Selected candidates will be required to translate content, articles, book chapters from English. Languages accepted: French, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, German. Other languages based on needs. Responsibilities: Translate and proofread manuscripts, indices, jacket/cover copy, and other materials prepared both paper and electronic manuscripts for design and typesetting. Help maintain and update various online databases in the target language Provide general administrative support in the target language Requirements: Excellent translating skillsStrong knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation details-oriented; organized; Familiarity with track changes and electronic copyediting in MS Word; experience with Adobe Acrobat

GRAPHIC / BOOK DESIGNER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide graphic design for its books. Selected candidates will be required to create covers, book layouts, and marketing material. Responsibilities: Concept, create and deliver design solutions for our books in print. Prepare rough drafts and present ideas. Amend designs after feedback. Ensure final graphics and layouts are visually appealing and ready for final production Requirements: Strong graphic design skills. Excellent skills with computers and design software (such as inDesign,  Illustrator, Photoshop, or others). Working knowledge of publishing industry trends. A functional vocabulary for design tools and typefaces.

BOOK MARKETER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to provide marketing support for its publishing arm, TBR Books. Selected candidates will be required to produce marketing plans for new publications, research markets for our new books, develop mailing lists, solicit bookstores and libraries. Responsibilities may include: Develop book marketing strategies for authors. Support, publicize, and facilitate book projects, and book talk events. Oversee development of print and electronic marketing materials’ including mailings. Oversee website content for program accounts. Track and analyze effectiveness of marketing strategies. Requirements: Excellent marketing skills •Strong knowledge of English. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Self-starter with the ability to prioritize and work independently. Creative marketing instinct.

ADVOCACY VIDEOMAKER

CALEC is seeking a current student filmmaker to direct and produce high quality short videos showcasing its work and advocacy. Responsibilities: Assembling, preparing and setting up equipment prior to filming. Develop story concept into a production-feasible, fully planned project. Work with supervisors, editor, and director of photography to deliver the project from a technical perspective. Directing shots efficiently. Once the scenes are filmed, must be able to participate in the editing process. Requirements: Background in filmmaking and/or media studies. Current university student. Solid experience with and aptitude towards cameras and other technical equipment. Be able to demonstrable ability with a strong video portfolio. Creative mind and storytelling skills

RESEARCHER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to conduct research project on dual-language education programs and multilingualism to support linguistic communities and multilingual families, and advocate for more dual-language education programs in public schools in the United States and other countries. Selected candidates will be required to survey dual-language programs and demographics, produce tables and charts, and produce user-friendly data for our advocacy effort. Requirements: Good quantitative and qualitative skills. Good surveying skills. Strong knowledge of Excel or other data management software. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

COUNSEL

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to support its advocacy effort and build a legal toolkit for parents and communities to support their efforts to transform schools and create dual-language programs in the US and other countries. Many grassroots efforts lack the legal knowledge that could make their case stronger. Requirements: Selected candidates will be required to research and produce documentation and flyers for parents and educators mainly based in the US but also in other countries. Skills: Legal background needed to research precedents and present this knowledge in a clear, documented way. Excellent English language skills. Knowledge of education law. Interest in social justice and nonprofit organizations.

RIGHTS MANAGER

CALEC is seeking talented individuals to support its publishing activities and manage publishing agreements, copyrights, translation agreements for its growing pool of international authors. Requirements: Selected candidates will be required to research current trends in the publishing industry, copyrights law,  contracts, and content protection.  Requirements: Legal background needed to research precedents and produce legal documents. Excellent English language skills. Knowledge of copyrights law. Interest in publishing industry.
